Fire Safety Training

On the warm, sunny morning of February 26th, sixteen library staff attended the first of two fire extinguisher trainings offered by the UCLA Environment, Health & Safety Department (EHSD), Fire Division. Firefighters Ricardo ("Rico") Barboza and Jim Carrico presented the different types of fires and extinguishers, along with how and when to use them. The session culminated in a hands-on practice where teams of two took turns extinguishing a fire while the firefighters supervised. Thanks to Michelle Torre for organizing the two training sessions.

2009-2010 UCLA Library Marie Saito Endowed Fellowship

The UCLA Library Marie Saito Endowed Fellowship was established to support a Master’s level student who is pursuing a Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree in the UCLA Department of Information Studies. Ms. Saito’s husband and son established the Fellowship in honor of their wife and mother. Ms. Saito was a longtime employee of the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library. The 2009 – 2010 Marie Saito Endowed Fellowship will be in the amount of $2,500.

Applicants for the Saito Fellowship must be students in the UCLA Department of Information Studies Program. Priority will be given to students who are employees of the UCLA Library and who are starting the second year of their MLIS. Special consideration will be given to those pursuing a career in biomedical librarianship. The Saito Fellowship may be awarded to a student in any year of their MLIS program.

Award of the Saito Fellowship is based on academic excellence rather than financial need. An applicant should submit a letter of reference from his or her supervisor or from another individual who can speak to the applicant’s potential contribution to the profession.
