Book and Bake Sale

The 40th Annual Library Staff Association Book and Bake Sale will be held November 13th and 14th. The sale will be on the YRL portico from 9am to 3pm both days with terrific sales happening each afternoon. We are in need of volunteers to help staff the book sale, as cashiers and sorters, or to provide baked goods. We recognize that staffing may be a problem with so many of our members no longer working in the YRL, yet we do hope to see as many of you as possible at the sale.

If you can help out please contact David Poepoe or Dan Palodichuk.

Election 2008 Get Registered, Get Informed and Vote!

Most every department and student group on campus did something during this historic election season. Across campus, numerous groups engaged in voter registration efforts to get as many students to register before the Oct. 20 deadline.

The UCLA Library also joined in the voter registration fervor. From October 6 - 17, College Library and YRL sponsored a Library Voter Registration Table. The first week we were located next to Powell at the top of Bruin Walk from 12-2; and the second week we re-located up to the North Campus eatery during the same hours. We handed out registration forms, provided League of Women Voters Ballot Proposition Analyses, and other voting information, including putting together an election resource guide: wiki.library.ucla.edu/Elections.

For all involved, we found it to be a gratifying experience - not only did we play a role in campus-wide effort, but the faculty and students appreciated seeing the Library out and about. Over the ten day period, we helped a total of 574 people (a daily average of 57 questions per 2 hours), and we handed out twice that many forms.

Overall, this was quite a success and it couldn’t have happened without the efforts and time of the following people:

  • Dawn Setzer and Ellen Watanabe, Library Communications, for creating and printing the Vote! Bookmarks, flyers, and table signs.
  • Dan Palodichuk, College Library, for taking care of set up, take down and even covering in between shifts.
  • Allison Armstrong, Cathy Brown, Debe Costa, Alicia Reiley, Brena Smith, Lise Snyder, College Library; Alice Hunt, Maria Jankowska, Kris Kasianovitz, YRL CRIS; and Valerie Bross, Cataloging and Metadata, for working at the table.
