Russell O'Neill Presentation Studio in the Science & Engineering Library's Learning Center

On Friday, June 6, 2008, the Science & Engineering Library (SEL) launched the opening of the Russell O'Neill Presentation Studio. The studio is space within the SEL Learning Center where students can use a wall camera, recording equipment and computers to practice and record their class presentations, and improve their efforts through viewing themselves. Mrs. O'Neill (widow of former Dean Russell O'Neill) and Dean Dhir, Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS), unveiled the sign and guests toasted the occasion.

SEL Librarian, Anita Colby viewed a rehearsal set-up at Georgia Institute of Technology and brought the idea back to the Librarians. To determine if the idea would be of value at UCLA, SEL offered students the opportunity to practice their group representations in its Learning Center over several quarters. After looking at the technological support provided by other universities to their students, Judy Consales, AUL, Sciences and Audrey Jackson, Head, SEL discussed the studio with Dean Dhir and he supported the idea and agreed to fund it. Then, Audrey worked with Greg Brown, Office of Instructional Development, to select and install the equipment that worked best in the space and with Mary Okino, CFO, HSSEAS, to arrange the funding.

The Studio should prove especially useful to students in the core engineering course, "Ethics and Society" that Professor O'Neill initiated in the 1990s. Many students learn engineering concepts at the same time that they grapple with English as a second language. They also have to learn to work in project groups to complete coursework. Librarians Anita Colby, Sharon Shafer (currently LIT) and Audrey Jackson worked with Professor O'Neill to incorporate a library resources component in the "Ethics and Society" classes and this relationship continues today.

Faculty and staff currently interested in the studio concept for their students include Associate Dean Rick Wesel (possible DVD samples of student learning for ABET accreditation); Professor Ann Karagozian (web conferencing); Rick Ainsworth and Audrey O'Neal, CEED (enrichment training for diverse students in the CEED programs); and Professor Ali Sayed, Electrical Engineering (practice for doctoral students' orals). Based on this initial response, SEL Librarians believe Professor O'Neill would be enthusiastic about this adjunct service to the students' engineering education named in his honor.

I love Lynda.com!

Here are some comments on Lynda.com from College Library's Dan Palodichuk:

Thanks for informing me about Lynda.com. I have been using it quite a lot. I like that I can watch video tutorials and do exercises. Lynda.com helps me further explore computer apps that allow me a little more finesse when making reports, presentations, and even just emailing.

Lynda.com provides tutorials for a variety of technologies. To start using Lynda.com, just complete a brief survey, linked from Library Human Resources' Learning & Development page. You will be provided with usernames and a password. (If one username is in use, choose another.)

International Information Literacy

The June 2008 issue of the Information Literacy Section newsletter is now available online at the IFLA site. The newsletter can be found at: www.ifla.org/VII/s42/news/IL-Newsletter200806.pdf.

New Copyright Publication

"5 Things You Should Read About Copyright and Sharing Your Instructional Materials" is now available from the Instruction Section, Research and Scholarship Committee, of the Association of College & Research Libraries. It is the inaugural issue of a proposed series of "5 Things..." publications, which will target current and under-discussed topics of importance to instruction librarians. The recommended "5 Things" are intended to be eclectic, thought-provoking, and to spark discussion among instruction librarians. They will be drawn not only from traditional library literature, but also from popular magazines and newspapers, the blogosphere, archived web presentations, and other media.

You can find "5 Things You Should Read About Copyright and Sharing Your Instructional Materials" at www.ala.org/ala/acrlbucket/is/iscommittees/webpages/research/fivethings/index.cfm.
