New Publications on Information Literacy

We would like to recommend two new publications on information literacy.

The first is titled Information Literacy Meets Library 2.0, and is edited by Peter Godwin and Jo Parker. The growing role that Web 2.0 technologies are playing in the development of library services has inspired the term "Library 2.0." In the context of information literacy, Library 2.0 incorporates interactive, multimedia technologies in library services and collections. Information Literacy Meets Library 2.0 provides an overview of emerging Library 2.0 technologies, discusses their impact on information literacy instruction, and provides case studies to inform practitioners. Notable topics include:

  • Using Wikipedia to eavesdrop on the scholarly conversation
  • Information literacy and RSS feeds
  • Library instruction on the go: podcasting
  • Joining the YouTube conversation to teach information literacy
  • Teaching information literacy through digital games

The second book is titled Information Literacy Instruction Handbook, and was edited by Christopher N. Cox and Elizabeth Blakesley Lindsay. It was developed under the auspices of the ACRL Instruction Section. This publication takes a practical approach to information literacy, emphasizing current issues and practices. Though designed as a comprehensive guide for newer information literacy professionals, more experienced librarians may also find it useful for refreshing their knowledge or learning about new developments. The chapters are written by experienced practitioners and cover a wide range of issues including:

  • The psychology of learning
  • Student academic integrity
  • Diversity
  • Instructional technology and assessment

To order online, visit the ALA Online Store (www.alastore.ala.org) or call 1-866-746-7252 to order by phone. Copies will also be available for purchase at the 2008 ALA Annual Meeting in Anaheim.

ACRL Programs at ALA 2008 in Anaheim

If you are attending the ALA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, here are two programs worth adding to your conference itinerary.

The first program is entitled "Creating Change: Teacher Librarians and New Learners." Presenter Dr. Jeffrey Liles (Assistant Professor of Education at St. John Fisher College) will discuss contemporary learning theory as applied to information literacy. Specific issues will include:

  • The evolution of learning theory, including the controversial notion of connectivism
  • The characteristics, needs, and expectations of today’s diverse learners and researchers
  • The need for librarians to embrace change, to learn new research approaches and teaching techniques, and to teach to an ever-evolving array of learners and researchers

The session will be held Sunday, June 29, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

The second program is entitled: "Is There a Right to Information Literacy? Academy Responsibility in the Information Age." This program will feature a panel of speakers exploring professional and ethical considerations regarding information literacy, and ways to empower librarians to foster change. The speakers will outline the seminal issues regarding the academic institution’s responsibility in ensuring the information competency of college graduates, and will consider whether postsecondary educational values are violated when these skills are not provided. The speakers will include Patricia Stanley (Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education), Lorie Roth (Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, California State University), Stephanie Sterling Brasley (Manager, Information Literacy Initiatives, California State University), and Penny Beile, University Librarian, University of Central Florida. The session will be held Sunday, June 29, 4:00-5:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlevents/acrlatannual.cfm.
