Treasure Hunt for Physical Sciences and Engineering Graduate Students
Submitted by Audrey Jackson

At the beginning of fall quarter 2007 and previously in 2006, the Science & Engineering Library (SEL) welcomed new graduate students from the 13 departments SEL serves with a fun and educational Treasure Hunt. Students were invited to respond to 10 questions by "hunting" on SEL’s website and providing the URL of the pages where they located the answers. They provided URLs for answers to questions such as "How do I check to see if the Library has a technical report?", "Where can I find e-journals in engineering and science?", "How can I find articles on my research topic?" or "Who is the Librarian for my department?"

The Treasure Hunt was initially announced at the graduate student general orientation held by the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. Each SEL Librarian then announced the Hunt in their individual orientations for the 13 departments: Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Bioengineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Earth & Space Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, and Statistics.

248 students took part in the Hunt at the SEL website (www.library.ucla.edu/sel) and 45 students completed the Hunt. The ten winners received a $15 gift card to any campus food service of their choice.

Crossword Puzzles and Database? Using Games to Generate Interest
Submitted by Amy Chatfield and Marion Peters

To publicize the new interface for ISI Web of Knowledge, the Biomedical Library (Biomed) and the Science & Engineering Library (SEL) cooperated in an outreach event on January 8, 2008. 76 attendees received publicity related items from library staff during the three hour event held in the Court of the Sciences. 19 attendees had in-depth questions about databases on the ISI Web of Knowledge platform (Web of Science, BIOSIS Previews, and Zoological Record) or other library services.

Biomed staff created a crossword puzzle for the event. To finish the puzzle, patrons needed to use the ISI databases. Completed puzzles were mailed to or dropped off at the libraries the following week. Prizes, including items donated by ISI, were given to those completing the puzzles. The pdf version of the puzzle was posted on Biomed’s blog blogs.library.ucla.edu/biomedical and SEL’s Web site www.library.ucla.edu/sel. Staff received favorable comments on using a puzzle as a means to entice users to explore a new interface.

Amy Chatfield (Biomed) and Marion Peters (SEL) coordinated the event with participation by Elaine Adams and Audrey Jackson from SEL, and Cheryl Bartel, Emily Brennan, Bob Freel, Pearl Ly, Andrea Lynch, and Rikke Ogawa representing Biomed. For a copy of the crossword puzzle or information on creating your own puzzle, please contact Amy Chatfield (achatfie@library.ucla.edu).

The Partnership of Sociology Faculty and Social Science Librarians: An Article

Caravello, Patti S., Edward Kain, Triveni Kuchi, Susan Macicak, and Gregory Weiss. 2008. Information Literacy: The Partnership of Sociology Faculty and Social Science Librarians. Teaching Sociology 36 (1).

Abstract: This paper discusses a joint project of the American Library Association and the American Sociological Association. The goal of this collaboration is to guarantee that students of sociology, particularly sociology majors, develop strong information literacy skills during their undergraduate experience. The article talks about national standards for information literacy and how they relate to the sociology major. It presents examples for applying the sociology information literacy standards to course assignments and the sociology curriculum. We also provide suggestions for building linkages between sociology faculty members and social science librarians, as well as ways in which information literacy outcomes might be assessed in the sociology curriculum.
