LSA Winter Party

The LSA Winter Party will take place on Tuesday, December 18th, from 10-11:30 in the Powell Rotunda. The event is free to current LSA members, and $8.00 for non-members.

The Winter Party will feature a brunch provided by LSA. Please bring your signature side dishes and desserts to share with other library staff. (Due to fire safety restrictions we will not be able to heat food in Powell, so any dishes that should be served hot need to be delivered ready to eat.) Send Lise Snyder (lsnyder@library.ucla.edu) an email if you plan to bring a dish.

As part of this event, a crafts fair will be held in the East Rotunda where library staff are welcome to sell their creations.

In conjunction with the UCLA Food Drive, we are again collecting canned goods for the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank, in support of their work to end hunger in Los Angeles County. We encourage you to bring the following to the party:

  • Canned meats: chili, baked beans and stews
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Personal care items: laundry soap, lotion and diapers
  • Other items: rice, pasta, pancake mix, cereal, coffee, tea, peanut butter and jelly

For more information about the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank go to lafoodbank.org.

Last, but not least, we are looking for folks to help with set up and clean up. Please contact Lise Snyder (lsnyder@library.ucla.edu), if you are interested in helping.

LSA Membership

LSA 2007 memberships expire at the end of December. New membership forms will be mailed soon and are now available online (staff.library.ucla.edu/lsa). You can mail in your renewal or bring it to the LSA Winter Party.

If you are not already an LSA member, there is no better time to join than the present. Membership gives you access to the upcoming LSA Winter Party and all of the events in 2008: a field trip to the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library (www.humnet.ucla.edu/humnet/clarklib); the LSA Summer Party; a Family Day outing; Summer Movie nights; and more.

LSA sponsors the Campbell Student Book Collection Award, and a scholarship for the MLIS program. Coming soon is a newly upgraded website with more postings, pictures, archives, information, and a blog. So whether you’re renewing, returning, or joining for the first time, you’ll have a full LSA experience.

Call for Papers: IFLA Annual Conference 2008

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) will have its Annual Conference in Quebec, Canada, August 10-14, 2008, and the Information Literacy and Academic and Research Libraries Sections are seeking proposals for their joint program covering the theme: Return on Investment: Learners' Outcomes in Information Literacy. Do They Really Learn? The papers will focus on methods that objectively measure students' information competencies.

Topics may include:

  • How are the methods used to evaluate the IL course's quality and cost-effectiveness?
  • What indicators should be identified to measure competency?
  • What comparisons can be made among different contexts, levels or disciplines?
  • What is the impact on pedagogical methods?

Proposals should include a title, an abstract of 200-400 words and a one-page biographical sketch providing the author's current employment information and title as well as a selected list of previous presentations and publications. Both the abstract and the full paper should be submitted as an MS Word file by email, no later than January 30, 2008 to Agnes Colnot (agnes.colnot@wanadoo.fr).

Submissions will be acknowledged by return email. Successful applicants will be notified by March 1, 2008. The full paper will be due May 1, 2008. The paper can be 3-21 pages in length and must meet IFLA guidelines, posted at: www.ifla.org/IV/ifla74/callinfo-en.htm. For more information, visit www.ifla.org/IV/ifla74/call-il-en.htm.
