ACRL Workshop on Assessing Learning Outcomes at ALA Midwinter

ACRL will be hosting a workshop during the ALA Midwinter Conference entitled: "Assessing Learning Outcomes in Programs Large and Small: A Hands-On Approach." At the workshop, participants will be guided through the assessment process based on the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards and the American Association for Higher Education’s "9 Principles of Good Practice for Assessing Student Learning."

Topics include:

  • Creating individualized rubrics
  • Using the rubric to assess learning
  • Collecting student work for assessment
  • Modifying instruction to improve student-learning outcomes

Call for Proposals for SCIL Works 2008

Proposals for presentations and posters are now being accepted for SCIL Works 2008. SCIL (Southern California Instruction Librarians) Works is an annual program where local instruction librarians can exchange ideas and share what’s new in information literacy. This year the half-day event will be take place on January, 25, 2008 at the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. The theme for SCIL Works 2008 is: "Putting Theory into Practice: the ‘Why’ Behind Instructional Strategies." In keeping with this theme, librarians will be discussing how they have used theories to make pedagogical and assessment decisions.

Suggested proposal topics include:

  • Theories you have used to support your own instructional design
  • Efficacy of instructional theories when applied
  • Personal experience(s) of how a particular expert’s theory was applied to your own instructional design

Proposals are limited to 300 words. The submission deadline is Friday, October 26, 2007. SCIL will notify presenters by Friday, November 9, 2007. Please submit proposals electronically to Dominique Turnbow, SCIL Vice Chair, at dturnbow@ucsd.edu.

Presentations will be 45-60 minutes. Presenters will be provided with Internet access and a projector. Additional technology and room arrangement preferences should be included in the proposal. Online Information Literacy Courses via SOLINET

SOLINET is offering online courses on information literacy, and Early Bird registration begins this month. The first course, entitled "Information Literacy Assessment," is a two-day course offering participants the opportunity to explore a range of information literacy assessment strategies through discussion and exercises. Participants will learn to evaluate and document the progress of their information literacy strategies and to address outcomes through designing effective assessment measures. The second class, entitled "Practical Approaches to Information Literacy," is a three-day course offering strategies for working more actively with faculty and students to change library learning environments in ways that will more actively engage students in the research process. Participants will learn to apply strategies for engaging students and faculty in the library and beyond, collaborate with faculty to design more effective library assignments, develop information literacy assessment tools, and plan the integration of technology into information literacy training.
