Information Literacy on YouTube?

Information professionals at the Teaching and Learning Center at the Otis College of Art and Design have been experimenting with creating YouTube videos as information literacy tutorials. Their list of productions includes What is information literacy?(www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeopJX5jJV8), an 8-minute tutorial discussing the basics of information literacy, and Identify Your Sources(www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-2hziLTSyU), a 10-minute tutorial teaching students how to determine whether the information found in periodicals is scholarly, popular, or professional. To learn more, visit library.otis.edu/informationliteracy.html.

Studying Students

Keep an eye out this September for a new ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) publication entitled, “Studying Students: The Undergraduate Research Project at the University of Rochester.” In this book, two librarians describe their experience collaborating with an anthropologist in the effort to decipher the process students undergo when writing research papers. Based on their findings, the authors devised innovative ways of engaging undergraduates around the writing process to improve their research skills and to help them better meet faculty expectations for research paper submission. The book will be available as a soft-cover print edition as well as an open access downloadable file. Pre-order information is available at www.acrl.org.

Call for Chapter Proposals: Casebook on Gaming in Academic Libraries

An upcoming ACRL Monograph entitled Casebook on Gaming in Academic Libraries, will discuss the variety of ways gaming has been incorporated into academic libraries. It will be divided into three sections:

  • Section 1: "Gaming as Marketing": How is gaming used to bring students into the library and make students aware of other library services?
  • Section 2: "Gaming and Collections": How have academic libraries started augmenting their collections with hardware and software?
  • Section 3: "Gaming and Teaching": How is gaming used for teaching information literacy skills in academic libraries? How does gaming fit into the academic classroom?

Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Information literacy games
  • Game night hosting
  • Student orientation games
  • Games in information commons
  • Game software and hardware collections
  • Games to train staff

To contribute a chapter, email your proposal to editors Amy Harris (a_harri2@uncg.edu) and Scott Rice (serice2@uncg.edu) on or before August 31, 2007. Proposals should be 400-600 words. Include your name, your affiliation, a working title, and an abstract. Authors will be notified of acceptance by September 14, 2007. The deadline for chapter submission will be January 15, 2008. The book will be published in the summer of 2008.
