Game Lab Researchers from the Syracuse University School of Information Studies, the American Library Association (ALA), and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana are working together to research gaming in libraries through a project called Game Lab. In this project, researchers will tackle the development of a classification structure for games and determine the public good served by gaming programs in libraries. Researchers are working to secure funding to build a research laboratory at the Information Institute of Syracuse, where they will explore new program ideas and replicate gaming programs currently available in libraries. Researchers will also explore the effectiveness of different types of gaming activities—not only video games, but also physical, face-to-face games like board and card games—with different socioeconomic and age groups. The results will be disseminated to libraries as a guide for selecting gaming activities for a particular demographic profile and program goal. For more information on the Game Lab project, see the Game Lab site at gamelab.syr.edu, or contact Scott Nicholson at 315-443-1640 or srnichol@syr.edu.
Project SAILS The Project for Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS) is a Web-based instrument for standardized assessment of information literacy skills. It is a Kent State University initiative based on the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education that allows libraries to document information literacy skill levels for groups of students and to pinpoint areas for improvement. It will give information literacy specialists the ability to measure information literacy skills, gather national data, provide norms, and compare information literacy measures with other indicators of student achievement. Two informational workshops on Project SAILS will be offered at the ALA Annual meeting in Washington. The first is an information and training session held Monday, June 25, 10-11 a.m. This session will include an introduction to SAILS, information on how to administer the test, and time for questions. The second session details the reading of the SAILS reports. This session will be held Monday, June 25, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Although this session is primarily intended for schools that complete testing this spring and receive a report in June, others are welcome to attend. To register, use the sign-up page on the Project SAILS website. The deadline for registration is Friday, June 15, 2007. There is no cost for either session. For additional details and to sign up, see the Workshop Details page at: www.projectsails.org/workshop_details.php.
