ILP Instructional Technology Discovery Zone

On May 11th, the ILP Instructional Technologies Interest Group hosted a "brownbag" event to showcase some instructional technology (Net Support School), and to hear from instructors who have used the technology for their classes. Held in one of the CLICC Classrooms, the Discovery Zone featured a Teamspot station (where multiple users can collaborate on a common screen; www.clicc.ucla.edu/labservices_teamspots.asp), an electronic whiteboard, the UCLA Library Sandbox (full of blogs and wikis), and a Second Life demo. In addition to hearing about how the technology can be used in the classroom, participants played along on their own workstations to see things from a student perspective as well. And yes, the event was blogged! For more thoughts, please see: sandbox.library.ucla.edu/blogs/lkemp.

Take a Look! A Library Blog Focused on Social Networking

Gerry McKiernan of the Iowa State University (IOU) Library created a blog back in April of this year "devoted to application and use of online social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace for any and all types of library-related programs or services." This blog, titled Friends: Social Networking Sites for Engaged Library Services, has entries relating to boundaries issues for these tools as well as parts of an IOU thesis, Online Self-Reported Information: Facebook a Hiring Tool for Businesses.

It is just starting out but already it has proven to be useful to those of us interested in this technology as a means to reach out to library clientele.

A New IL Publication

The inaugural issue of Communications in Information Literacy, available at www.comminfolit.org, was recently published. As the title suggests, this online, peer-reviewed journal focuses on information literacy. The content for this issue includes some editorials and articles on information and research skills of students as well as strategies for curriculum-integrated information literacy. Happy reading!
