Practical Pedagogy for Library Instructors-- Call for Authors

Is your instructional approach getting applause from your undergraduates? Are students leaving your instruction sessions saying "this is the best time I’ve ever had in the library?" Do faculty members tell you how impressed they are with your instruction sessions? Do you have time this summer to sit down and write something that might help boost your CV?

If you’ve answered "yes" to any of these questions, you might consider contributing to a new book published in collaboration with ACRL, tentatively titled Practical Pedagogy for Library Instructors: 15 Strategies to Make Your Students Stand Up and Applaud. Organizers Doug Cook and Ryan Sittler are looking for 15 chapter authors for Part Two of their book. They want real librarians doing real things that work in the classroom. If you have an instructional approach that you believe is successful, please consider submitting a proposal.

Your chapter would include:
1. An explanation of one learning strategy (explain how it fits into Part One/Chapter One and define your instructional goals)
2. Rationale for why you chose this strategy (offer your personal reasons)
3. Applications (explain what the strategy is best for)
4. Case study or lesson plan (detail your real-world application)
5. Personal reflection (share the successes you’ve had with this strategy)

Format:
10-12 double-spaced manuscript pages [maximum]
Chicago style (www.chicagomanualofstyle.org)

Please email Doug (dr_library_guy@yahoo.com) AND Ryan (rlsittler@aol.com) if you are interested in writing a chapter.

Proposals should be submitted no later than Midnight, April 30, 2007.

Include the following in your message:
1. 1 paragraph explaining the potential chapter.
2. 1 paragraph describing the lesson plan/case study which would use your proposed pedagogical strategy.
3. 1 paragraph describing what you have written before. (However first-time authors are welcome!)
4. 1 paragraph biography. (Tell about yourself!)

Timeline:
June 1, 2007 -- finalized list of authors/chapters September 1, 2007 -- final chapters to Doug and Ryan January 15, 2007 -- final edits to ACRL June 2008 -- Book ready for ALA Annual debut

Consultants for Subject Specific Information Literacy Standards-- Call for Applicants

ACRL and the Institute for Information Literacy Executive Committee are seeking ACRL member volunteers with a strong foundation in information literacy concepts and standards to serve as Information Literacy Consultants to ACRL units that are developing subject-specific information literacy standards.

Responsibilities: The Information Literacy Consultant works closely with the ACRL unit in the creation of a subject-specific information literacy standards document that meets core criteria and has sound content related to information literacy and educational outcomes. The Consultant acts as a resource person in assisting the unit during the process of developing the standards in accordance with the Tip Sheet for Developing Subject-Specific Information Literacy Standards. The Information Literacy Consultant is not responsible for the final review of the standards documents and recommendation to the ACRL Board; these tasks are the responsibility of the ACRL Information Literacy Advisory Committee and Standards and Accreditation Committee. The Information Literacy Consultant should expect to be involved with the project for about 1-2 years. Training will be provided for Information Literacy Consultants to provide additional information about their role, responsibilities, relationship to ACRL, and guidelines for subject-specific information literacy standards.

Qualifications: Information Literacy Consultants should have:

  • Strong understanding of and experience using the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education
  • Expertise in teaching and learning issues
  • Fluency in the language of student learning outcomes and assessment
  • Experience working with information literacy principles in the context of specific disciplines
  • Experience working in collaborative environments

Applications: Applicants interested in serving as an Information Literacy Consultant should complete the Information Literacy Consultants Application Form. To be considered in the initial appointment of Information Literacy Consultants, please submit your application by April 23, 2007. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis for the development of a pool of potential consultants. Individual consultants will be selected from this pool to work on projects with ACRL units.
