IL Reports from UCLA Librarians

This new feature of the "Spotlight" column is devoted to you and your instructional efforts! If you have created a new class, or worked on an information literacy-related project or initiative at UCLA or in a broader context, contact Andrea Lynch (andlynch@library.ucla.edu), Chair of the ILP Communications Interest Group. Please attach a description of what you have done that is IL-related, and we will place it in the "Spotlight."

For this inaugural feature (see below), Toshie Marra, Japanese Studies Librarian, has submitted information on her work with the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Resources.

Please let us know what you are doing so that we may spotlight your IL endeavors and successes!

Information Literacy Portal Site for Japanese Resources Now Available
(Submitted by Toshie Marra)

What can be done to promote awareness of specialized materials when librarians dealing with these materials are scarce and users are scattered nation-wide? The North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) has attempted to tackle this challenging situation with particular regard to Japanese resources by 1) providing selected librarians with training in information literacy; 2) co-sponsoring regional workshops and specialized seminars with a focus on Japanese electronic resources; and 3) creating an Information Literacy Resources Portal for librarians as a tool in preparing instruction sessions.

The UCLA Library has been an active player in this NCC project. In 2004 the Library hosted the first of the two Training the Trainers (T-3) Workshops in information literacy, in which thirty-three Japanese and East Asian studies librarians from North America participated, including Yoko Okunishi who recently joined UCLA East Asian Library and Toshie Marra. The workshop presentation is available at: . In 2005, Toshie Marra and three other librarians from California trained by the T-3 Workshop offered a regional workshop on Chinese and Japanese electronic resources at the UC San Diego Library in conjunction with the annual meeting of the East Asian Academic Librarians of California. And, in November 2006 the UCLA Library hosted the Workshop on Electronic Resources in Science, Technology, and Medicine which Marion Peters and Toshie Marra coordinated in collaboration with the Japan Science and Technology Agency. The workshop had twenty-three participants from nine academic institutions in California, including Elaine Adams, Valerie Bross, Hong Cheng, Chamya Kincy, JaEun Ku, Catherine Y. Lee, Andrea Lynch, and Amy Tsiang.

The NCC Information Literacy Resources Portal, now available at www.fas.harvard.edu/~ncc/eresources/index.html, is the result of collaboration among Japanese and East Asian studies librarians trained by the T-3 Workshops. The Portal contains numerous lesson plans, handouts, course syllabus, and guides contributed by the participants. The Teaching Support Materials site, www.fas.harvard.edu/~ncc/eresources/teachingsupportmaterials.html, serves as a repository of information literacy instruction materials for Japanese resources which are freely available to librarians and researchers. More materials, including online tutorials, are to be added to the Portal in the future.
