The Winter 2007 Issue of Educator’s Spotlight Digest is Now Available

The Winter 2007 issue of Educators' Spotlight Digest (ESD), the free online publication of S.O.S. for Information Literacy, is now available at www.sosspotlight.org. Check out this issue’s Connection Column entitled "Easing the High School to College Transition: Creating an Information Literacy Continuum," which highlights the efforts of the Information Literacy Continuum Committee, a group of academic and school librarians organized by the Rochester Regional Library Council, to ensure that students in K-12 and higher education institutions learn information seeking skills.

Other articles in this issue include:

  • "Information Literacy Assessment: Putting the Cart before the Horse" by Dr. Nancy Everhart, Associate Professor and Director of the School Library Media Program at Florida State University
  • "Designing Star Quality S.O.S. Lesson Plans" by Dr. Ruth V. Small, Director of Syracuse University’s Center for Digital Literacy
  • "Using Popular Film to Teach Evaluation" by Pauline Shostack, Librarian, Onondaga Community College

Educators' Spotlight Digest (ESD) is a magazine devoted to shining the spotlight on excellence in information literacy instruction in K-16 education. S.O.S. for Information Literacy is funded by the Institute of Museum & Library Services in collaboration with AASL, ACRL and Syracuse University's Center for Digital Literacy.

If you would like to contribute an article or your favorite teaching strategies, please contact Marilyn Arnone, Editor, at mparnone@syr.edu. If you would like to contribute to the "College Connection" column, contact Abby Kasowitz-Scheer at askasowi@syr.edu.

Online Workshop on Classroom Management Techniques for Librarians

SOLINET will be sponsoring a two-day online workshop in April entitled "Classroom Management Techniques for Librarians" and early registration is fast approaching! Take advantage of discounted rates while learning strategies that can enhance the instruction process.

Description: Librarians are teachers too, however, as library school students, we are not exposed to the wide-ranging "toolbox" of classroom management strategies that teachers have learned and apply every day. This two day, two hours each day class will, through discussion and exercises, introduce a range of classroom management, teaching, and presentation techniques that librarians can use and apply in a variety of settings to keep classes motivated and on task.

All classes offered through SOLINET are advertised in Eastern Time. Registration must be received at least one week prior to the start date of the class. Registrants should receive an email offering detailed login and set-up instructions. Those registrants who have not received an email at least three days prior to the class should call Educational Services at 1-800-999-8558. For more information about SOLINET workshops, visit the FAQ’s web page at, www.solinet.net/workshops/ecademyfaqs, and the Technical Requirements web page at, www.solinet.net/workshops/workshop_templ.cfm?doc_id=700.
