Nursing Liaison Librarians Receive Recognition

Thursday August 17, 2006 was a big day for Cheryl A. Bartel and Andrea Lynch, nursing liaison librarians from the UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library. They each received a certificate from the UCLA Healthcare Department of Nursing’s Clinical Practice Committee.

The Clinical Practice Committee meets monthly to ensure that patient care practice documents (i.e. policies, guidelines, and competencies) are based on the latest research. The role of the librarians on this committee is to facilitate identification and retrieval of the evidence so then it can be evaluated and incorporated into the nursing documents.

The certificate recognizes the librarians’ important contribution to the Clinical Practice Committee and to nursing practice at UCLA. At the Committee’s recognition and awards segment of their August 17th meeting, Dr. Anna Gawlinski, Director of Evidence Based Practice, spoke about the librarians and their support of the group’s goals. The certificate is signed by Heidi Crooks, Senior Associate Director, Chief Nursing Executive and Dr. Gawlinski.

A Shared History: Blacks in Mexico

Alva Moore Stevenson, Program Representative in the UCLA Center for Oral History Research, was one of the instructors for a teachers’ workshop, Africa-Latin American Intersections: Cultural Synergies Through the Centuries, held July 22-August 3.

Alva’s lecture, A Shared History: Blacks in Mexico, on August 2 included a PowerPoint presentation, film and handouts. The first half gave an overview of the history of the African-descended population in Mexico while the second half detailed the history of Alva’s own Afro Mexican roots. The workshop was sponsored by the UCLA African Studies and Latin American Studies Centers.

Generating Ideas and Questions

On August 10, 2006, a number of librarians from the UCLA Library attended the UC Information Literacy Common Interest Group Workshop, "Infusing Information Literacy throughout the UCs: Programmatic Considerations and Practical Approaches," held at UC Irvine. The schedule included a keynote by Jennifer L. Dorner, an Assistant Professor/Librarian at Portland State University, 2 sets of panels (one focused on subject disciplines and the other focused on new models for instruction), small discussion group sessions (topics ranged from innovations to librarian roles), and poster sessions.

Five UCLA librarians presented at this event. Also included in the list below are their roles and the titles of their presentations.

  • Stephanie Brasley, Information Literacy Instruction Coordinator at College Library
    • Small Group Discussion Presenter
    • "ETS ICT Literacy Testing"
  • Patti Caravello, Director of the Information Literacy Program and Librarian for Anthropology, Archaeology, and Sociology
    • Panelist
    • "Sociology and Anthropology (creation and uses of IL standards for disciplines)"
  • Esther Grassian, Information Literacy Outreach Coordinator at College Library and an Adjunct Lecturer in Information Studies Department of the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies
    • Panelist
    • "‘12/7’ on Integrating IL into Lower-Division Courses"
  • Aura Lippincott, Instructional Technology Librarian at the Rosenfeld Library
    • Panelist
    • "Smart Strategies for Business Research: A secondary research workshop for MBA field study programs"
  • Diane Mizrachi, Information Literacy Instruction Coordinator at College Library
    • Small Group Discussion Presenter
    • "Campus TV spots and video"

Here are some of the questions and "take-homes" from the librarians who attended on August 10th:

  • "Discipline-based standards may be good for upper-division undergrads and grad students, but what about lower-division undergrads?"

  • "[S]ome librarians are thinking critically and creatively about the lists of information literacy competencies as they seek how best to apply them to students focused on specific disciplines, and as they try to use them in instruction."

  • "What can UCLA do to apply and/or learn from UC Berkeley’s Mellon Library/Faculty Fellowship for Undergraduate Research (www.lib.berkeley.edu/MellonInstitute/)?"

  • "Ms. Dorner indicated these ways to get involved at your campus:
    • Visit classes [in your subject area] more frequently
    • Incorporate digital learning objects in course management systems
    • Offer interactive chat sessions
    • Take advantage of opportunities to introduce yourself and be prepared to discuss the services and resources of your library (be prepared with a customizable elevator speech)"

For more information on this workshop and to view the posters, visit: ucilcig.googlepages.com. This site will soon have available: 1) the handouts from the panelists; 2) notes from the small discussion groups; and 3) a wiki where ideas, events, etc. relating to information literacy can be discussed.

Coming soon... a brown-bag event that will provide you an opportunity to have discussions with the librarians who attended this UC workshop!

ACRL to sponsor participant in ALA Emerging Leaders Program

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the America Library Association (ALA), has announced its support of the Emerging Leaders 2007 initiative. ALA President Leslie Burger's new program will "enable 100 new librarians to get on the fast track to ALA and professional leadership."

Emerging Leaders 2007 will select and train 100 new librarians beginning with a daylong session at the 2007 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. Afterward, it will continue online for six months, culminating at the 2007 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. For more information on the ALA Emerging Leaders Program, please visit lb.princetonlibrary.org/emerging_leaders.html.

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) will provide a travel stipend for one member to participate in the American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leaders Program. The stipend provides $500 for travel to each conference where training will be provided. ACRL will select one participant to sponsor through a competitive application process.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Membership in ALA and ACRL
  • Age (under 35) or new librarians of any age with fewer than 5 years post-MLS experience
  • Willingness to meet all other obligations for the program, as outlined by ALA President Leslie Burger at lb.princetonlibrary.org/emerging_leaders.html.

Interested ACRL members may apply by submitting an Emerging Leaders application (at lb.princetonlibrary.org/documents/EmergingLeadersApplication_000.pdf) to David Connolly (dconnolly@ala.org) by September 30, 2006:

All applications must be submitted electronically with the subject line, "ACRL Emerging Leader." The individual selected by the ACRL president will be notified by September 22 and asked to submit the full application by the September 30 deadline.
